The Jazz Channel Presents Freddie Jackson (BET on Jazz)

The Jazz Channel Presents Freddie Jackson (BET on Jazz)With his church-derived tenor voice, his suave, onstage demeanor, and his excellent taste in clothes, Harlem-born vocalist Freddie Jackson was the most dominant black male singer in the '80s after Luther Vandross. His eclectic mix of sass and class is evident in his live shows and on his many singles, which were staples on the urban contemporary/quiet storm radio stations. On this Black Entertainment Television concert, Jackson struts his stuff for the ladies and delivers his best-loved hits, from the torchy and tempting "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)" and "You Are My Lady," to the sophisticated funk of "Jam Tonight." Freddie Jackson is an animated performer, in complete control of himself and his appreciative audience. This concert, which also contains an intimate "Meet the Artist" interview segment, showcases the full range of Freddie Jackson's urbane artistry, and it proves that there's nothing more enduring than a well-written and well-performed love song. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Is bloating a reason for your weight gain?

As a society we seem to always be concerned with how we look. And, actually, rightfully so. We are, in general, overweight and unhealthy. As a whole, our western culture gives us bad skin, pains, toxins, hair loss, erectile dysfunction, etc. But, you set yourself some goals this New Year. You were going to lose weight. And you did. But your belly still sticks out like a balloon. What’s going on here? Your arms and legs, shoulders and face look thinner, but your belly just won’t go away.

Well, the answer is that you could just be bloated. Many times, you are assuming your still fat or that you need to “tone up” but really you need to look into your diet.
There are mainly two body types in women. There is a pear-shaped woman, where the fat goes mostly to the hips. This fat distribution suggests a hormone imbalance.

The second type is called apple-shaped and this is the one that is really dangerous. The fat is not in the hips but mostly in the belly.

The easiest way to check your belly fat is to tighten your stomach and try to grab the fat from your belly. What do you notice? Can you feel a lot of fat? Well, the amount of fat that you can grab is proportionate usually to the amount of fat you can’t grab, what’s inside your belly…the really dangerous stuff.

It’s here that liposuction won’t work. Liposuction is not going to make you healthier. Someone goes in for liposuction and the doctors take away the harmless fat, and a person assumes that they are healthier. Meanwhile, it is nothing but cosmetic.

A big belly can also be explained as bloating, or gas. While bloating can be a hormonal imbalance, it is not necessarily the case.  It’s very often the gut problem. Take for example something like beer. You put those kinds of carbs into your gut, and if  you have yeast or other bad bugs inside or other , you are getting a lot of gas. So, basically, it means that something is wrong in the gut.

What’s interesting is that normal gas and normal stool should smell neutral, not really bad. May have a little bit of smell but not much. There is a reason for that smell. A chromatography analysis will show that the reason for the unpleasant smell is a combination of methanethiol,  hydrogen sulfide and dimethyl sulfide  ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatulence ), that is very toxic  ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_sulfide ).

Interesting enough, hydrogen sulfate is produced when protein is rotten. Even more interesting is that hydrogen sulfide is almost as poisonous as cyanide, one of the most toxic things we can come across.   Can you imagine how harmful it is to have so much toxic hydrogen sulfide in a bloated belly!

Just take a look here at how toxic hydrogen sulfide really is at the Agency of Toxic Substances and Diseases:  http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/substances/toxsubstance.asp?toxid=67.

So, what can you do? Well, you have to understand that this is not a normal situation. There is abnormal bacteria in your gut, not enough enzymes or regulation. You need to see a holistic doctor, because the truth is if it doesn’t smell right, there could be a big problem.

There are so many reasons why our bellies are unhealthy. The normal amount of stool for an American to make is four ounces, but on average, we make 8. We eat too much and can’t digest it. And because we cannot digest protein, it rots and isn’t absorbed into our bodies and the toxic gasses are the by product.

At our offices, we can help you get back to natural health, help you get healthy gut, naturally.

How about you?Do you feel bloated? Is you belly too big?

Weight Loss Advice: Don’t Eat Like a “Typical American”

As a nutrition expert, people are always asking me for my “weight loss secrets.” The truth is, I don’t have any secrets. I think the credible information that would help most people is already out there. Things are changing ever so slowly. I see a growing trend toward simplifying weight loss strategies. Many people are saying that they aren’t dieting (yay!), they’re just making healthier food choices and only eating when hungry. (That’s a big one. Try it for one day and you will realize, you really don’t know what hunger and fullness feels like.)

One simple tip I can offer is to avoid eating like a typical American – the SAD diet(Standard American Diet). I recently appeared on TV with a client to show how she is losing weight – and inches – by avoiding the SAD eating habits of typical Americans.

Here’s the low-down on the typical American eating habits from the 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES a.k.a. the Census of food habits).

About 70% of Americans do not meet recommendations for fruit and vegetable intake. I like to crunch on veggies between meals and check my plate at lunch and dinner for fresh, steamed, or broiled non-starchy veggies. Looking for something new? Try fennel, jicama, and kale. Aim for 2-3 fruits a day. I like having one fruit with breakfast and one with lunch or dessert after dinner. Fruit is nature’s candy and really should form the foundation of sugar intake.Americans get nearly 30 grams of saturated fat per day. Some saturated fat is fine. You may find it in coconut milk, coconut oil, or lean animal meats. The recommendation is less than 10% of calories. Since we all eat different calories, our limits are different. If you focus on adding in plant foods and limiting meats, animal skins, solid fats like butter, and cheese you should be in your range. Most healthy adults need 2,000 calories or less, which puts the upper level of saturated fat at 22 grams a day. Replacing a fast food burger meal (about 14 g saturated fat) with a home cooked vegetarian meal will help you slash it way down. The average American consumes about 22 teaspoons of sugar a day. It is most important to get naturally occurring sugars from fruits and dairy products. Watch the added sugar found in flavored drinks, yogurts, and desserts. Check labels. The American Heart Association recommends limiting sugar to 6 tsp/day for women (100 kcal) and 9 tsp/day for men (150 kcal).Cut way back on salt intake. The typical American gets more than 3500 mg of salt a day. The recommended range is 500-2100 mg per day. Ask for “no salt” when ordering at restaurants. You can also split an entree and a large garden (veggie) salad. Pile half the plate with veggies and the other half with “anything else.” It’s a quick way to eat less of the salty prepared food and get in veggies, which are naturally low in salt. You should also read labels of sauces and marinades you buy for the quick and healthy meals you’re trying to make at home.Filed under: adult health, calories, diet, eating healthy, food, fruits, health, vegetables, weight loss | Tagged: American diet, diet, weight loss

Inadequate Sleep Undermines Dietary Fat Loss

Dieting sometimes just doesn’t work out as hoped, despite your best intentions. Before you reexamine your exercise routine or diet, consider your sleeping habits.

A small study conducted at the University of Chicago suggests sleep is the third vital element in the battle to shed fat. Exercise and dietary efforts may be less effective without a regular 7-8 hours of shuteye.

Dieters in the study shed the same amount of weight with less sleep, however when they had adequate sleep they burned off more body fat. An abstract is available on the website of the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

A group of 10 overweight study participants with an average BMI of 27.4 adopted a diet with 90 percent of calories required to maintain weight without exercise. The volunteers dieted in two 14-day intervals. One involved sleep restriction with only 5.5 hours per night compared to 8.5 hours in the control portion of the study.

The subjects lost an average of 6.6 lbs during each 14-day dieting period. Half of the weight lost was body fat with adequate sleep. In the sleep restriction condition, the dieters lost only 1.3 lbs of fat and 5.3 lbs of lean body mass.

They also felt hungrier. The “hunger hormone” Ghrelin increased during sleep loss, causing a spike in appetites. Ghrelin also promotes the retention of fat, the study authors report.

"If your goal is to lose fat, skipping sleep is like poking sticks in your bicycle wheels," said Plamen Penev, MD, PhD, the study’s principal investigator. “One should not ignore the way they sleep when going on a diet.”

The authors intend to further investigate how sleep loss affects diet results. They plan on conducting similar, lengthier studies with larger samples of dieters.

Organic Healthy Meals Delivered to Your Door

"Organic" seems to be the theme of my posts today, and I have found another great source for completely organic diet meals delivered to your door. As you know, I have tried NutriSystem a couple of times now, and though I have lost weight with the program, the foods are not all that a person who loves organic food would want them to be. And what about the person who needs to avoid gluten? Watch the labels on the prepared foods for some of the popular weight loss programs, as many products contain gluten not only because it is naturally occurring in the food, but it is ADDED to some foods. You can visit the link to find samples of gluten free meals offered at the site I've been looking at today. The thing that attracted me the most was the idea of having healthy meals delivered each Friday, weekly, and the prices start at about $8 and change per meal. What a wonderful and  reasonable luxury...having someone else prepare your healthy organic meals for you.  It's also a great way to lose weight for the person on the go who doesn't have time to cook healthy meals for themselves.I am going to be exploring this for myself, it looks delicious, like it will go nicely with the organic wine I am considering mentioned in my earlier post.

Weight Loss Dos And Don’ts: What’s In Your Grocery Cart?

August 29th, 2010 by DrToniBrayer in Better Health Network, Health Tips, True Stories

EverythingHealth

Grocery cartI know it’s not politically correct to look at what other people buy at the grocery store, but as a physician I just can’t help noticing. Some carts contain huge containers of soda pop, Doritos, frozen pizza, and other packaged goods.

I’m not surprised, because at the end of every isle is a display case that offers the giant soda for 89 cents or the Doritos on special for $1.29. With this type of marketing, it takes a strong person to resist the “bargain.”

Yesterday the woman in front of me (overweight, middle-aged) had a strange assortment of goods that she probably thought would help her lose weight. She had several Weight Watcher-type meals, diet drinks, power bars, and lots of “light” items — “light butter,” “light crackers,” “light yogurt,” and ”light ice cream.”

Folks, this won’t work. Eating this way won’t help her lose weight. She needs to make dramatic changes to drop the pounds.

Recent research shows that sweet-tasting, low-calorie beverages may trigger cravings for more sweets. A study of rats showed that the animals who were fed saccharin yogurt ate more calories and got fatter than those who ate yogurt flavored with glucose. It doesn’t take long for our taste buds to stop craving sweet drinks and enjoy water. The first step is to cut out the diet drinks.

The “light” items are a joke. Cutting a few fat calories a day will not lead to weight loss. She needs to avoid those center isles that have cereal, crackers, frozen food, canned food, pasta and rice and shop the periphery. Fruit is the best snack and if you want to have a bowl of ice cream (once you are at ideal body weight), there’s no problem. But to get to ideal body weight, she will need to cut out the processed carbs, sugar, and packaged foods.

And let’s talk about “power bars.” Is 230 calories really a bargain? With 45g of carbohydrates and 20g of sugar, this is only useful if it’s eaten by itself as a meal or if you are an endurance athlete that needs a burst of carbs to finish the Tour de France.

Unfortunately people believe they are doing the right thing by shopping this way. Then they get frustrated with themselves when they don’t lose weight. Weight loss requires a major change in lifestyle, and it starts by avoiding the middle isles and ignoring the display cases at the grocery stores. Madison Avenue advertising is not our friend.

How to lose weight

Now there's a headline which I am sure garnered either a second look or a sigh of 'not another pile of crap'. Well I actually like this list so I am going to write about how to lose weight. But first the news this morning tells us that the best way to lose weight is to get a good night's sleep. Not sure what one has to do with another but I'll keep listening to the news until I find out - maybe it will be before I finish this post in which case I'll tell you why.

The real reason I'm writing is about this new list of how to lose weight.

1. Ditch your scale. It is merely a tool to drive you crazy. Your weight goes up by one pound and you get depressed. Your weight goes down one pound and you eat a pizza. Then you repeat the cycle. I will stop weighing myself.

2. To get in shape you need to do cardio, strength training, AND flexibility training. Well this is not me. I will continue to go for a walk every day but the strength and flexibility issues are a problem due to my back.

3. What you eat is important. Just because you are dieting doesn't mean you need to go hungry. Eat real food and good fats to keep you feeling full.

4. Skip the quick diets and fads. (The same goes true for the get rich schemes and the promise of a cure for cancer.) Anything that takes pounds off fast will put them back on right away.

5. Apparently you will miss the old you. You got fat because you ate chocolate cake every night. You might miss that. Pay attention.

I think there are more articles on weight control than on cancer on the internet. Also this morning I have learned that fat grows differently on different parts of the body - this is important because it is some kind of breakthrough. (I need coffee to compute all this.) And if you are fat, you can't remember anything - so can I claim being fat and having chemo brain for being a spaceshot? Finally, if you are tired, you feel hungrier so get more sleep. This is another reason why we need a good night's sleep regularly.

I need to get moving and take a shower - I promise not to weigh myself this morning like I often do. Then I will make us healthy lunches to take with us.

Weight loss success stories

This is the first part of the new “Weight loss success stories” series featured on Weight loss help and tips.net.

When it comes to weight loss I have tried nearly everything over the last few years. From all types of diet pills to prepackaged meal plans; I have bought nearly everything. Not to mention the countless hours searching the Internet for quick ways to lose weight. Over that time it seemed like nothing would ever help melt the pounds off. That is until I found the real truth about losing weight (balanced diet & regular exercise). After a few short months of taking care of what I eat and exercising on a regular basis, I started to notice the pounds were actually coming off.

When I was younger it seemed like I could eat whatever I wanted and I would never gain a pound. I was not exactly constantly on the go to burn off those excess calories, but being younger my metabolism was high and I had no problem staying relatively active. However, once I started to hit my 30s everything started to change. I slowly noticed that my pants were starting to get a little tighter. Like most people, I ignored it and let the pounds sneak up on me. After awhile it started to get a little embarrassing to be in public with no shirt on. This can really put a damper on the weekend at the beach.

So, finally after a few years I had had enough and decided I was going to finally get rid of the weight. I joined a gym and started going a few times a week on a regular basis. At first it felt good to be getting exercise, and I did feel a burst of energy which lasted through the week. However, after a few weeks of going to the gym and hitting it hard I was still not seeing the results I wanted. So, I knew it was time to take further action.

I have never been a real healthy eater so I made a concerted effort to try and change my diet. I started incorporating some low-fat meals a few times a week into my regular diet. However, the truth is I’m just not that dedicated of a person. I really like to eat and I felt I was really limiting myself. In addition, the excitement of going to the gym and making a lifestyle change was starting to wear off. It was becoming a real chore to make myself get to the gym to work out.

Since traditional methods were not working I decided to start trying diet pills. Most of these pills simply made my stomach feel upset even though they provided me with some extra energy throughout the day. In conjunction with the pills I started buying expensive meal plans. However, most of these meal plans do not provide enough calories for a grown man. I would cheat in between meals and pig out on unhealthy snacks which only exacerbated the problem.

So, this was my endless cycle until I finally realized that weight loss has only one path. I have tried everything else, so I figured why not give that a try too. The real solution to weight loss is not pills or expensive exercise equipment not even costly gym memberships. All you need is motivation; long term commitment, patience, careful but not strict diet and being physically active an alive. Living a lifestyle that is real keeping exaggerations away is the recipe for success. You do not need to starve yourself or spend endless hours in the gym to lose weight. Try to keep a balance on what you eat and on what you do and the results will come.

Weight loss tips from the celebrity world

Want to have just like body of your celebrity icon? Aren’t you wondering how they were able to retain just lean and so good looking body? Certainly when we talk about weight loss, it’s essentially an inflexible thing to do and to accomplish especially if you don’t discipline yourself and not genuine enough in performing it.

There are a lot of diet programs, exercises or medications that you have to sustain in order for you to have the most gorgeous and in shape body in the world. Though it may be exaggeratedly express but its true! Everybody wants to have the right contour and perfect figure just like those celebrities that we’re watching in our televisions. But you must put an effort on it and follow what is only hale and hearty.

Everybody likes to attain Madonna’s figure or Jennifer Lopez and Angelina Jolie body? Maybe you want to turn out to be like Jessica Alba or Jessica Simpson? This can be possible, that is if you’re going to follow their weight loss tips earnestly and with control, without this, what your doing will become ineffective.

What keeps Madonna in shape from head to toe is her routine exercise which is called Ashtanga Yoga. This is a light on meditation but serious on developing vigor and endurance. In her exercise, she uses series of poses that involves weaving in a mixture of standing, seated, backbends, inversions, balancing, and twisting poses into sun greeting poses that includes a standing forward bend, upward dog, downward dog, and other poses. She’s also strict in her diet and hardly handles junk food. She’s using the macrobiotic diet which is based on the old practice centuries ago; this is done by listening to the inner breadth when you eat.

The secret of Angelina Jolie’s curve body is her strong desire in having a healthy way of living; she formulated a meal which is a combination of steamed sea or steamed beef and vegetables together with soy milk and implementing a sugar-free diet, but above all she firmly said that there should be no smoking or drinking substances that could damage your body. According to Jennifer Lopez, if you want to lose weight just cut carbohydrates in your diet. She also added that you must watch the food that you’re taking in specially the quantity, it’s better to be in moderation and always follow a healthy lifestyle meaning to say no vices at all just like Angelina Jolie. This will keep your body fit, healthy and always in shape.

Another celebrity Jessica Alba shared her tips. According to her, what makes her well is that, everyday she’s spending time for her workout for about 45 minutes to an hour. She is spending 10-15 minutes doing treadmills or elliptical machine. Then she does 50 lunges and crunches. For Jessica Simpson, she also spend two hours in her workout doing squats and lunges and ate everything but with moderation.

All the weight loss tips said by our celebrities are indeed effective and actually had work for them. It can also be effective in us provided that you wisely choose what could be the best and effectual weight loss program for you so that you will not comprise your health in your longing to attain such body.

Weight loss diet tips for men and women of all ages

“I’m on a diet!” This is what we usually hear from people who want to lose weight. But what diet is effective in losing weight? Starvation diet is definitely a No! No! Our body needs food to produce energy so we can do our daily activities. The nutrients we get from food including fats and carbohydrates are important in maintaining the physiologic function of the body. However, these nutrients become bad for the body when they are taken in excess. The nutrients, if not converted to energy are stored in the body as fat deposits, thus the appearance of the undesirable belly fat and love handles. A balanced diet comprising all these nutrients as well as protein, vitamins and minerals, and calcium should be supplied to the body through the food we eat. This article shares some weight loss diet tips for men and women of all ages

The role of fat in a weight loss diet

Fats are an essential food nutrient because they provide twice the amount of energy than carbohydrates and proteins, and they help in protecting body organs and tissues and maintaining the body temperature.

Fats= 9 calories

Carbohydrates= 4 calories

Protein= 4 calories

CAUTION: Too much fat can be very harmful to the body. Excess fat do not only form the bulges on your body but it could also clog the arteries of the heart causing myocardial infarction or heart attack.

What is a low-fat diet?

Low- Fat diet has been promoted by the US Department of Health since the late 1970’s. But what does low- fat diet really mean?

Basically, there are three types of fat: The Saturated fat which is the Bad fat because it increases the blood cholesterol level, The Polyunsaturated fat that decreases the blood cholesterol level, and the Monounsaturated fat which decreases the Low- density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol or the “bad cholesterol”.

Low- fat diet means: decreasing the consumption of food that contains saturated fat while increasing the consumption of food that contains polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat. Food like most meat and dairy products, butter, and tropical oils such as coconut oil and palm oil should be avoided as they are high in saturated fat. Polyunsaturated fat are usually found in plant food sources such as corn, soybean, safflower, and sunflower. Food sources for Monounsaturated fat includes olive oil, peanut oil, canola oil, and some fruits like avocado.

Carbohydrates are bad or good?

Carbohydrates provides real-time energy in the body and should account for 50- 60% of the total calories we take in everyday. However, with sedentary lifestyle, the calories you get from carbohydrates that are supposed to be converted to real-time energy are stored as fat deposits, thus you gain weight.

Low –carb diets are among the most popular weight loss diets. There are many variations like:

The Anabolic Diet which alternates low carb and periods of high carb eating

Carbohydrate addicts which serves 2 meals with no carbs and 1 meal of 1/3 carb a day

Ketogenic Diet which eliminates carbohydrate completely and compensates the caloric need with high fat and moderate protein intake.

But as per definition, having less than 50-60% of carb ratio in a serving is low carb diet. If your goal is to maintain your current weight, do take in moderate carb which is about 40-50% carb in your diet. And if you want to lose weight, you may go with low- carb diet which contains 25-39% carb. Lower than this is not really recommended as it could cause conditions like ketosis, presence of ketone bodies in the blood. Very high ketone level can make the blood acidic and may damage organs like the liver and the kidneys.

Some weight loss diet tips that can help eat healthier are:

Instead of eating ice cream, have a low fat yogurt or sherbet.Use skim milk (fat- free milk) instead of whole milk.Instead of eating pasta alfredo (white sauce pasta) eat pasta marinara (red sauce pasta). You may substitute bacon with lean ham.Since the American Heart Association recommends avoiding coconut oil because it contains 85- 90% saturated fat, use olive oil or canola oil when cooking food.Chocoholics may eat dark chocolate which is rich in anti-oxidant rather than a milk chocolate.Use beef loin instead of brisketInstead of white bread eat whole grain bread such as wheat breadSnack on Peaches (61 calories/pc.), blackberries (62 calories/serving), and carrot sticks (52 calories/cup) instead of fried chips.

Being overweight or obese doesn’t only place a person at risk from developing diseases like diabetes, respiratory diseases, cancer, osteoarthritis and cardiovascular diseases but it could also affect one’s emotional and social life. People who are overweight and obese could suffer from low self-esteem, depression, and impaired body image. Because of this, more and more people are being conscious of their weight. Losing weight is a tough challenge; you must be really committed as lifestyle changes should be made.

Weight loss stories: Parasitic Worms for Weight Loss in Hong Kong

The fitness industry in Hong Kong is big. This is because of the increasing obesity rate in the country due to sedentary lifestyle, fast food availability, and long working hours. Hong Kong locals have tried a lot of weight loss innovations available including diet pills, body suits, exercise machines, fat-burning soap, and just about anything.

A new weight loss craze in Hong Kong is the ingestion of the eggs of a certain parasitic worm called Ascaris (Ascaris Lumbricoides).  Health Officials confirmed the news and further explained that a certain Chinese-language website has been promoting the use of products that contain worm eggs that promises fast weight loss results.

A representative from the Hong Kong’s Department of Health said that there is no supporting study or solid evidence that the use of parasitic worms is an effective way of losing weight. Though one of the signs of Ascaris infestation is weight loss, this effect happens at a later stage where these worms can do more harm on the body than good.

The health officer further explained that Ascaris Lumbricoides or commonly called as roundworm is a giant intestinal parasitic worm that could grow up to 15 to 35 inches long and could produce more than 200,000 eggs per day inside the body. Furthermore, these worms could cause diarrhea, stomach pain, distention, and malnutrition because they eat up most of the nutrients from the body and could lacerate intestinal walls using their sharp teeth.

With their uncontrollable population growth, these worms could roll up in a ball also called as “Ascaris bolus” that could cause an obstruction on the intestinal, biliary, and pancreatic ducts. Obstructions on these pathways cause serious complications which can be fatal. Moreover, these worms could migrate to other parts of the body like the lungs, causing respiratory problems.

The DOH-HK spokesman urged the people to consult a health professional before starting on any “special” diet so people will know the pros, cons and risks of that particular weight loss program. He also added that eating less and exercising more is still the healthiest and most effective means of losing weight.

For those who have already ingested the eggs or have Ascaris adults living in their intestines, you would need to contact your nearest healthcare provider or the DOH-HK immediately for de-worming and counseling. However, for worse cases of infestation, the patient may need to undergo a surgery for manual removal of the worms.

The Most Effective Way For Women To Burn Body Fat

Most women at some point want to lose weight in their lives. If you fall in to this category right now, then you’ve made up your mind that you need to eat a little healthier, and you need to exercise a little more.

Exercise is so broad though… what is your game plan? To walk, run, take an aerobics class? All of these are, of course, workouts but are they enough to help you lose your body fat?

Unfortunately for most women, the answer is no.

The best exercise to burn body fat and keep your body trim and tight is all in weight training. Don’t let this be intimidating… women are completely different than men in our composition so you don’t have to worry about bulking up.

In fact, weight lifting not only helps you lose fat during a workout by burning calories but your body works hard to recover afterwards by keeping your metabolism raised for up to 48 hours afterwards! Running and aerobic based workouts can’t claim this.

It gets better, for each pound of lean, sexy muscle you have your body will burn an extra 50 calories (roughly) daily, even if you’re sitting on the couch watching Dancing With The Stars. That is because it takes energy to keep muscle happy, it needs fuel and protein to keep it happy!

Another great thing about lifting weights is that it’s never boring. The number one reason a woman quits her workout regiment isn’t because she’s not getting results, it’s because she loses motivation. Stay motivated with weight training by changing up your exercises regularly, learning new moves, and watching your strength and confidence increase from workout to workout.

If you have never picked up a dumbbell before don’t let that stop you. There are several options, of course you can ask a personal trainer at your gym for a tour and sign up for a few sessions or for a fraction of the price you can look into online personal training which is growing in popularity due to the great price.

No matter what you want to do, remember if what you’re doing now isn’t working don’t you think it’s worth giving it a go?

All weights aren’t created equal though. Just like you don’t burn as many calories walking as you do running, you get different results from different weight training techniques.

Sure those weight machines span the floors of most gyms but these are small, isolated moves that create little calorie burn and little muscle toning. The best results come from total body workouts, and to get that from these machines you would have to spend a long time on all the machines available.

That is why free weights are great. Not only can you work several big muscles at once, you can great large range of motion moves that will blast more body fat and give you better results faster.

If you’re ready to give it a go, here are a few of my favorite exercises:
Dumbbell squats
Split squats
Bench press
Curl to press
Single arm dumbbell clean and presses

These are just a few examples but all of them work several big muscles and will have you out of breath by the end of your set. Which takes us to the next question… how many sets and reps should you be doing?

For fat burning results aim to do 2-3 sets of 13-15 reps. Use a weight that is challenging enough that you can’t go past 15 if you wanted. And that should get you great results!

Good luck!

Which are the best weight loss foods?

The calories we get from the food we eat are very important because it acts as a fuel to keep our body working. The excess calories that we take in are converted into fat deposits or “reserved energy”. The fat deposits can be burned by doing regular workouts, sports, and any other activities that require energy.  However, because people are so busy with their job, family, and any other things as well as the preference of staying at home to relax during weekends, the excess fats are left unburned and accumulated overtime causing the person to gain weight. Every 3,500 excess calories that we put inside our body allows us to gain one pound, and every 3,500 calories we burn shed off a pound. Since it is easier to control the amount of calories we put inside the body than doing intensive workouts to burn it off, this article aims to provide information on which are the best foods for weight loss.

There are a lot of diet programs available today; high protein diet, low calorie diet, low-fat diet, no-fat diet, low-carb diet, no-carb diet, water therapy diet, and even starvation diet. These diets could probably help you lose weight, however losing weight does not necessarily equal to being healthy. So, health professionals certainly agree on one diet, and that is eating a balanced diet. A balanced diet is composed of a daily meal that contains the recommended amount of carbohydrates, protein, fats, calcium, and vitamins and minerals. If you want to lose weight, the adjustment happens on the amount of calories you take in everyday; eat low-calorie foods from all the food groups daily. You have to remember though that you should not go below more than 10%-20% from your daily recommended calorie requirement because your body needs energy to perform its physiologic functions like the blood circulation, respiration, and pumping of the heart.

Carbohydrates from whole grains are important energy source; the less processed they are, the more nutrients and fiber they contain. Nutritionists recommend eating 6-11 servings from this food group per day. For example:

Food   per 100 grams or 3.5 oz

Protein plays a major part in the building and repairing muscles. Lean muscles help in metabolism, thus resulting to faster weight loss. It is recommended to eat 2-3 servings of protein each day.

Calories per 100 grams or 3.5 oz

It is recommended to eat 2-4 fruit servings and 2-5 vegetable servings per day. The nutrients we get from this food group like fiber help in cleansing the body. Other nutrients like Vitamin C, Iron, and Folic Acid helps in making our body strong and healthy.

Calories per 100 grams or 3.5 oz

Try to have 2-3 servings of dairy products daily because it provides us with stronger bones and healthier teeth, thus helps in preventing osteoporosis and bone breakage when doing workouts or sports.

Calories per 100 grams or 3.5 oz

Eat fats in moderation as this contains very high calories. It is recommended to use low fat alternatives like non-stick cooking spray when cooking food. Avoid foods that are high in saturated fat as they raise the bad cholesterol level; instead eat fats that are high in monounsaturated which lowers the bad cholesterol.

Use the above as a guide in planning your daily meal. It is highly recommended to plan your meal a night or a week before so you can calculate the amount of calories you will take in ahead of time thus avoiding over consumption of calories. You may use free online food calculators in case the food you are planning to eat is not listed here. With commitment and discipline, you will achieve the lean and healthy body you always wanted in no time.

Weight Loss Tips for Kids

In a previous post we shared some weight loss tips for teens and talked about the major causes of teenage obesity. In this post we are going to give you some ideas (to the parents) on what you can do to help your kids maintain their normal weight. Unfortunately the problem of obesity starts on a very early age and the sooner you can deal with it the better will be for the overall health of your children.

If your child is spending more and more time in front of the TV or playing video games then it’s important to make sure they get enough exercise to stay fit and healthy.  Obesity amongst children is becoming an ever greater issue especially as it’s known to cause other health problems such as diabetes.

It’s often difficult for parents to be strict about what their children eat. We all want our kids to have everything they wish for but in reality this isn’t always good for them. Even so, weight loss tips for kids shouldn’t include trying to get your child to understand calories. Instead you need to encourage healthy eating and reasonable portion sizes.

Fortunately, stopping weight gain and reducing weight in children is much easier than many people think. In most cases you’ll need to cut back on the amount of food the child consumes by only a small amount. For example, if you want to stop your child gaining weight then you’ll probably only need to reduce his or her calorie intake by around 50-100 calories per day. This is easy to do by slightly reducing potion sizes and replacing unhealthy snacks with healthy ones.

The best way for your child to lose weight is through a combination of a healthy diet and exercise so in this respect the techniques are no different to that you would use for an adult. However, you definitely don’t want to make your child conscious of being overweight so the changes should be made subtly. For example, there are many kids’ sports teams across the country and this can be a fun way for the child to burn extra calories. If your child isn’t interested in sports then taking them on regular walks or buying them a new skateboard could be a different way of getting them to exercise whilst having fun.

Another important technique for getting your child to lose weight is to set a good example. If your kids see that you regularly eat unhealthy snacks and huge meals then they will think this is normal. You should be a role model by eating healthily and exercising regularly. Not only will this set the right example for your kids but it’ll also be beneficial to your overall health!

Weight Loss Tips for Teenage girls

The teenager years, or the adolescent, or the puberty years, whatever you prefer to call it, is one of the main turning points in one’s life. It is also the time that both girls and boys become conscious of themselves, which is why most of them want to lose weight. Granted, weight loss can be achieved just by about anyone, but, because of their childish tendencies, these teenagers try to lose weight in a very unhealthy manner.

At some point, especially with teenage girls, most prefer the ‘fast track’ and other diet regimens that promise to give results in a few weeks, or even days. However, these schemes not only they do not present results but they may generate side-effects that are quite harmful to the body.

If you do not want to do a deep research on how to lose weight here are some weight loss tips for teenage girls that will give you a good idea of what you need to do to address your weight problem. The list below is by no means complete but by following these tips you ensure that you are going towards the correct direction.

Breakfast is one of the most important meals, and this is even more important for teenagers that need the nutrients and minerals in order to supplement their growing bodies. Eating healthy in the morning will give you more energy to cope with your lessons and activities and will keep your stomach full until launch time. If you think about it, all it takes to eat breakfast in the morning is to wake up 10 minutes earlier. Once you make it a habit everything else will be easier and you will feel better and healthier.Snack on fresh fruits and vegetables. If you really want to lose weight, you need snacks that are not only delicious and tasty but are also packed with nutrients and vitamins. As a teenager you need all the energy you can get from food and fruits and vegetables are among the best sources. Perfect examples are apples, oranges, bananas and apricots.Commit yourself to doing as much physical activity as possible. A careful diet is only the first part of the weight loss equation; the other part is physical activity and exercise. You do not have to join a gym or do any formal training; any physical activity is beneficial for your weight loss efforts provided that you do it regularly. For example do not underestimate the benefits of walking in losing weight. Walking is easy to do and can do wonders to your weight loss. Whenever you get a chance to walk, run, climb the stairs, and engage into sports (basketball, tennis etc) do it. It will help you burn calories faster and boost your metabolism.Do not forget that if you cannot address your weight loss problem alone, there are dedicated professionals to give you guidance and advice. The web is certainly a good way to get information but if this fails you need to consult a physician or a dietician first. This is in order to have a proper and full physical examination of your body, and to know the types of food that you should be eating.

Finally, it is good to care about your appearance and weight but do not take it very seriously. There are more important aspects of a person’s character that bypass the external appearance and enrich the internal beauty. Do not lose your confidence and self esteem and be sure that weight loss is a problem that you can tackle if you really want to. It sometimes takes more time then you might think but there is absolutely no reason why you cannot make it.

Weight loss – How to calculate my ideal weight?

As a weight loss advisor in a fitness gym, it has been our policy that every new member will be assessed by me. Because of that, I have met a lot of people with different weight who have been struggling with weight loss for a long time. Some people are aware of their current weight status; some are in denial, while others just don’t care.

Many people have a different perception of what is the ideal weight. Some say it is a hundred pounds while others say it’s one hundred fifty. These numbers may be correct, but do you know that the ideal weight is determined together with the height?

During physical assessment of new members, one of the basic things I discuss with them is their Body Mass Index or BMI. Through BMI, I am able to determine if the client is underweight, normal, overweight, obese, or extremely obese. This way, together with their fitness instructor, we are able to formulate an effective weight management program specifically designed for that particular client.

Body Mass Index or BMI is a widely used tool by health professionals to categorize an individual to a certain weight group. This method is defined as the ratio of body weight and height. It is usually correlated with the percentage of fat deposits in the body, however people with increased muscle mass or those with larger body frame can also have an increased BMI.

There are three ways to measure a person’s BMI, the first equation is by dividing the weight in kilograms by the square of the height in meters. This is the simplest and universally used formula:

BMI = ( Weight in Kilograms / ( Height in Meters x Height in Meters ) )

Another way to get the person’s BMI is by dividing the person’s weight in pounds times 4.88 by the square of height in feet. The last option is by dividing the weight in pounds times 703 by the square of height in inches.

BMI = ( Weight in Pounds / ( Height in inches x Height in inches ) ) x 703

BMI = ( Weight in LB / ( Height in ft x Height in ft ) ) x 4.88

You may use any of the equations above, depending on which equation you are comfortable with. However, the first equation which is utilizing the SI unit of measure is highly recommended because it is what health professionals use.

After computing the BMI, the next step is to interpret the results. Look at your BMI and try to see where you BMI fit in to the following categories:

People with a BMI between18.5 – 24.9 are considered to have an ‘ideal weight’.And just little above that, i.e. BMI of 25 – 29.9, are categorized as Overweight. In the 2007 survey of the US Department of Health and Human Services, It has been recorded that 63% of the total population of America are overweight.People are facing weight issues in a different scale. However, the most alarming concern is the growing population of people who are overweight and obese. This problem has not only affected the adults but it has also affected the children as well.

It is very important for everyone to know how to calculate the ideal body weight because it can give you an indication if you need to eat more, eat less, or just continue eating the same amount of food. By doing so, you will be saving yourself the trouble of seeking medical interventions to help you add or lose weight.

I Want To Lose Weight But I Have No Motivation

There’s no doubt that the hardest part of losing weight is staying motivated. Weight loss isn’t something that happens overnight – you need to stick at it if you want to see results. Most people know how to lose weight so the main reason everyone isn’t slim and healthy is that it’s difficult to keep up a weight loss regime for a long period of time. Here are some tips for staying motivated whilst losing weight.

1.    The first thing you need to do is work out why you want to lose weight in the first place. Is it because you want to be generally healthier? Are you worried about the way you look? Is it because there’s an important wedding coming up? Everyone is different and you need to decide why losing weight is important to you personally before working out how to increase your motivation.
2.    The next tip is to work out some long, medium and short term goals. Your long term goal should be the final amount of weight you want to lose. This can be as much as you want as long as you understand it’ll take time to get there. The medium and short term goals should provide you with targets to aim towards in an attempt to reach your final target. Setting smaller targets is a great way of increasing your motivation because it allows you to measure your progress.
3.    Another great way to stay motivated is to have a weight loss partner. If you know someone who wants to lose weight then you can keep each other company while exercising, keep track of what the other is eating and provide support for each other. If you know you have to answer to someone other than yourself it can make a big difference.
4.    Entering a sporting event such as a fun run or bike race will keep you on track when exercising and provide something to work towards. It can be hard to keep exercising on a daily basis if there is no end goal. Just be careful not to aim too high to begin with.
5.    Many people find that keeping a journal of their weight loss efforts can help them to stay motivated. The useful thing about a diary is that if you’re having a bad day you can look back and see how much progress you’ve made. Sometimes it can be difficult to gauge progress through memory alone and a diary solves this problem. You don’t have to write in it every day unless you want to. If you would like to make the most out of a diary then you could even attach photos every few weeks to see the changes in your body shape. There’s nothing more motivational than knowing you’re going to have to see yourself naked on a regular basis!
6.    Also, most people find it easier to get motivated to exercise in the morning. After a long days work nothing seems more appealing than lying down on the sofa watching TV for a few hours. If you never want to exercise after work then try to get up a bit earlier to do a 20 minute cardiovascular workout.
7.    Try to do something every day. Even if it’s only a few press-ups you should keep your momentum going by exercising each and every day.

Ultimately, success and failure when it comes to weight loss depends on your motivation. If you can find a way to keep motivated over a long period of time then you’re well on your way to losing as much weight as you want.

The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, and the combination of aerobics and strength training burns more calories than either alone. Smith offers both beginning and advanced modifications so you can work at your own pace. Insets give helpful alignment tips. You start with an 8-minute warm up, then you work your arms with weights for 6 minutes. Four different aerobic segments follow, totaling 30 minutes. Most of the aerobic moves are simple and frequently repeated, with no difficult choreography until the last segment, which becomes dancier. After the aerobics, you do standing legwork for 5 minutes, add weights for another 5 minutes, and cool down for 6 minutes. At the end of the video, Smith explains a nutrition program for weight loss. --Joan Price
